Japan, China and South Korea FinMins To Meet Ahead of G20

Finance ministers and central bank governors of Japan, China and South Korea will hold their first meeting in over two years on Friday in Cairns, Australia ahead of the weekend meetings of the Group of 20 nations there, Japan’s Finance Ministry said Tuesday.

Until 2012, the three Asian countries had held such a meeting almost every May on the sidelines of an annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank, but have since skipped it without clarifying why amid strained ties between Japan and the others.

Chinese and South Korean criticism of Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso’s visit to Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo last year and the April sinking of a passenger ferry in South Korea are believed to be behind the lack of the tripartite meeting last year and this May, respectively.
