EU Leaders Stress on Deadline for U.S. Trade Agreement

European Union governments are clinging to an end-2015 deadline for clinching a transatlantic trade pact even as those negotiating the deal warn that negotiations shouldn’t be rushed and have declined to set a timetable.

“The EU and the U.S. should make all efforts to conclude negotiations on a mutually beneficial” Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership “by the end of 2015,” EU leaders will say at a summit in Brussels tomorrow, according to draft conclusions obtained by Bloomberg News.

While leaders urge a swift completion, officials on both sides of the Atlantic have said they want a “fresh start” in their talks since the EU’s chief negotiator, Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem, took up her post at the start of last month. The next official round of discussions is scheduled for February.
