Asian markets outside Japan rose early Friday on the back of a strong close on Wall Street overnight, but a stronger yen curbed risk appetite in Tokyo.
On Thursday, U.S. stocks closed sharply higher, supported by the announcement of a cease fire deal between Russia and Ukraine that will take effect from February 15. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.6 percent, while the S&P 500 settled 1 percent higher. The Nasdaq rallied 1.2 percent to finish at its highest level since March 2000.
Crude oil futures also climbed overnight, arresting a two-session losing streak, as industry spending cuts and a weaker dollar spurred buying. U.S. March crude futures closed up $2.37 at $51.21 a barrel, while March Brent futures were up $2 at nearly $57 a barrel.
