Japanese Business Sentiment Lower in December

Business sentiment in Japan went down for the fifth straight month in December, a Teikoku Databank Ltd. survey showed Thursday.

The business confidence diffusion index for the reporting month came to 43.0, down 0.5 point from the preceding month, the private credit research firm said.

A rise in personnel costs, higher raw material prices reflecting the weaker yen, and heavy snow dealt a blow to construction companies and other industries, it said.

The index declined for six of the 10 industrial sectors. Of them, the construction industry is finding it difficult to take on new orders amid a shortage of workers, while the transportation and warehouse sector faces a decrease in logistics linked to public works projects, Teikoku Databank said.
